About Paeroa

The town of Paeroa, New Zealand, is located in the Hauraki District in the Waikato Region. It is just over two hours drive southeast of Auckland. It is best known as the birthplace of the iconic New Zealand soft drink Lemon and Paeroa, or L&P as it is often called. L&P is a lemon-flavoured soft drink initially made with the mineral spring water from Paeroa. It was first produced and sold in New Zealand in the late 1940s. It grew in popularity and is now manufactured by Coca-Cola in Auckland, New Zealand. The drink's history is celebrated with a 13-meter-high replica of a bottle of the popular soda. It is a must-have photo opportunity. Need transport? Call The Coach Company New Zealand!

Historical Maritime Museum and Park, Paeroa

The Historical Maritime Museum and Park in Paeroa are trendy places to visit. There is a historically significant museum set within a beautiful park. The park grounds feature several events during the year, including “Music in the Park”, “Paeroa Christmas Lights”, and “ANZAC Poppies in the Park”. From within the park, you can embark on a river cruise. You can enjoy cruises on one of three Ohinemuri and Waihou rivers vessels. The cruises last between one and two hours, depending on your choice, and include morning or afternoon tea after your cruise. You can also book a cruise for any occasion, including tour groups, weddings, and private functions.

The museum holds a significant collection of artefacts relating to Paeroa and its role in maritime history. Considered one of the best displays of New Zealand and local maritime history, you will see displays including a collection of navigational instruments such as sextants and compasses. There is also an ornate toilet bowl from the Elingamite, which sank in 1902. The museum is staffed by knowledgeable and friendly volunteers who will help make the most of your visit.

Bullswool Heritage Farm

Located just eight kilometres from the Paeroa town centre, Bullswool Heritage Farm offers many things to see and do. Here, you will find the Karangahake Native Bird Reserve, a working farm, and several museums. There is also their Play Paddock, which your children will enjoy.

The Karangahake Native Bird Reserve is fully fenced and has a mature native forest with two spring creeks. A hand-crafted walkway with educational signage guides you through the reserve. The walk through the account takes about 30 minutes, but there are some steps and narrow places, so prams are not recommended.

There are seven museums. One is the Working Farm Tools Museum. Here, you will find an extensive and exciting display of tools used to build and develop rural New Zealand. Other museums include Working Horses of New Zealand, Sheep Shed Museum, Kauri Museum, and the Kauri Museum.

The main attraction is the farm. It is a working farm, and the animals are kept in large paddocks in natural flocks and herds. The animals are pretty friendly, and you are welcome to feed them. The farm provides feeder scoops, so grazing animals of any size is easy. As babies arrive year-round, you will likely see new arrivals on your visit. You will see emus, alpacas, llamas, deer, paint horses, Kune Kune pigs, rare breed chickens, ducks, pheasants, coloured sheep, and even donkeys.

You are welcome to bring your food and picnic at Bullswool Heritage Farm. There is no cafe, but drinks and ice cream are available for sale. Public toilets are available, including a disabled bathroom with baby-changing facilities. Dogs are not allowed on the farm. Aside from the Karangahake Native Bird Reserve walkway, the farm is accessible for wheelchairs.
